I've already gotten my arse kicked once or twice for relying on sectoid feedback deaths or accurate rocket fire. You won't find yourself missing out on any great revelations if you skip the stock game and it should stop you from forming bad habits that won't be tolerated in LW. Besides, things are different enough between LW and base game that it warrants different playstyles, not to mention different tactics and builds. Start on normal, don't be afraid to fail or restart. Vanilla is a great game and something to experience, but if you don't mind a vertical cliff for a learning curve then just watch a 'How To' vid to get the basics and jump straight to the good stuff. I'll disagree with the rest and say straight to Long War.
